I otter be sculpting an otter
Everyone makes puns when talking about otters, right? Oh well, I just had to do it. Otters are very playful creatures, so they would be a perfect subject for a sculpture. My wife and I enjoy kayaking in Monterey Bay in northern California. It is a marine preserve, home to many otters among the other vast array of sea life. We see them floating blissfully on their backs in the gentle ocean swells, surrounded by kelp forests, diving under the surface if we get too close with the kayak.
Otters are also found in rivers as well as the ocean. They are graceful swimmers, with long sleek bodies and thick flat tails following behind. They make fantastic shapes with their bodies as they swim. This, of course, makes for a sculpture with elegant shape. I sketched a concept drawing to explore their shape. I'll try out a few other ideas and see which one will become a sculpture.
